This series highlights the significant potential of biomethane as a renewable and net-zero carbon alternative to natural gas in Australia, advocating for a biomethane revolution driven by converting organic waste—like food scraps and farm residue—into a usable energy source. This process, which utilizes anaerobic digestion to produce gas chemically identical to fossil natural gas, offers a crucial “drop-in” solution for decarbonizing existing infrastructure and hard-to-electrify industries requiring continuous, high-intensity heat. Furthermore, its adoption fosters a beneficial circular economy by reducing waste emissions, creating regional jobs, providing bigenic (net-zero) CO2 for industry use and yielding nutrient-rich fertilizer as a valuable byproduct. However, the series concludes that, while the technology is proven and successful internationally (e.g., Denmark), Australia urgently needs decisive policy support and investment to overcome awareness gaps and fully scale biomethane production, thereby unlocking its full potential for energy security and sustainability.
